The Kingdoms of This World

Earthly governments are controlled by the men or women who have gained their position by convincing their colleagues, as well as the people, that they have the wisdom to govern well the country they represent. They surround themselves with powerful people who they believe will be able to advise them wisely in their policy-making and decisions. These advisors are the so-called “cream of the crop” of worldly wisdom in all spheres of life. Many are long-time politicians who have had much experience in compromise and manipulation of others to acquire the results they seek.

Earthly governments are strongly influenced by the accepted culture of the world in which they find themselves, whether that culture is morally grounded or not. Their popularity is measured by the many polls taken, that in turn affect their future decisions to maintain the backing of the people they govern, and especially so if there is an upcoming election and they wish to hold on to their position of power. They are bombarded by the many lobbyists that financially support them and of course to keep the money coming in, many concessions must be made to pacify this very important source of income and support. If we could see behind the closed door of politics, we would quickly know that “the half was and is never told.”

By contrast, how different are the ways of God. Quoting from the words of a truly committed Christian writer, J.R. Miller, on this topic: “Christ is building His kingdom with earth's broken things.  Men want only the strong, the successful, the unbroken, in building their kingdoms, but God ‘...has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; the weak things of the world to shame the strong, the lowly things of this world and the despised things and the things that are not to make void the things that are, that no one may boast before Him...’  (1 Corinthians 1:26-31).  Heaven will be filled with earth's broken lives, and there is no bruised reed that Christ cannot take and restore to glorious blessedness and beauty.  He can take the life crushed by pain or sorrow and make it into a harp whose music shall be all Praise.  He can lift earth's saddest failures to heaven's glory.”

He is talking about you and me, the “foolish” indeed so far as the world’s evaluation is concerned.  We are considered trash by some in the world around us.  But what does it matter what the world may think if we are following Jesus?  Our Lord speaks to us in the words below:

"Follow Me, and I will make you:
Make you speak My words with power,
Make you channels of My mercy,
Make you helpful every hour.

"Follow Me, and I will make you:
Make you what you cannot be,
Make you loving, trustful, godly,
Make you even like to Me. (1 John 3:1-2)

Yes, one day soon the kingdoms of this world will be no more. We read in Revelation 11:15, “The kingdoms of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and forever.” This grand day is again prophesied in Isaiah 9:6-7: “For unto us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government shall be on His shoulders. He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.”

Though they look for prosperity and peace, it cannot to be found anywhere through worldly wisdom. The more the world keeps looking and trying, the more is their frustration. This is exactly what the Apostle Paul is talking about in Romans 8:19-22, “The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.  We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.”  It will not be until God has completed the work that He has begun in each member of the Bride of Christ, that the Lord Jesus will return to set up the Kingdom, assisted then by His Bride, in blessing all the families of the earth – a promise made to Abraham and his seed (See Gen. 12:1-3 and Gal. 3:16 and 29). “’Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen.’ Come Lord Jesus” (Revelation 21:20).
